A Natural Building Introduction

with Architecture for Humanity (Toronto Chapter)

Join us for a jam-packed afternoon of learning all the basics about building with EARTH and STRAW, including a tour of a small straw bale and straw clay studio building and a demonstration on plastering straw. 

This special event is co-hosted with the Toronto Chapter of Architecture for Humanity (AFH), for those interested in natural building and would like to learn from OSBBC Vice President and soma earth Director, Ingrid Cryns, a professional straw bale Architect.


The afternoon will consist of: 

A Presentation Talk on Sustainable Building with Straw covering;

  • busting the myths about cost, insulation, acoustical & fire ratings
  • history and Ontario permit issues
  • design principles and construction process
  • why it is better for our earth and our health!

A Presentation Talk on working with Earth and Plasters covering;

    • the several benefits of increasing the amount of earth in your building
    • history of buildings using earth
    • earth plaster basics, pro’s & con’s of earth vs. lime vs. cement plasters
    • essentials of plaster recipe mixes
A Tour Talk and plaster demo mixing and applying on straw bale.
